GRAND JUNCTION, Colo zithromax discount. €” Dr. Rachel LaCount grasped a metal hoop at a playground and spun in circles with zithromax discount her 7-year-old son, turning the distant mesas of the Colorado National Monument into a red-tinged blur. LaCount has lived in this western Colorado city of 64,000 nearly her whole life.

As a hospital pathologist, she knows better than most that her hometown has become one of the nation’s top breeding grounds for the delta variant of buy antibiotics. €œThe delta variant’s super scary,” zithromax discount LaCount said. That highly transmissible variant, first detected in India, is now the dominant buy antibiotics strain in the United States. Colorado is among the states with the highest proportion of the delta variant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mesa County has the most delta variant cases of any county in Colorado, state health officials zithromax discount report, making the area a hot spot within a hot spot. A CDC team and the state’s epidemiologist traveled to Grand Junction to investigate how and why cases of the variant were moving so quickly in Mesa County. At her hospital, LaCount has put in orders for more rapid buy antibiotics tests as the caseload has grown. She’s seen the intensive care unit zithromax discount start filling up with buy antibiotics patients, so that hospital officials are placing two in a room against normal practices.

Despite these alarming signs, many in Mesa County have let down their guard. The rate of eligible residents fully vaccinated has stalled zithromax discount at about 42%. LaCount has noticed that few people wear masks anymore at the grocery store. Thousands of people recently flocked to Mack, 20 miles from Grand Junction, to attend the Country Jam music festival, which could accelerate the variant’s spread to the concertgoers’ hometowns.

As cases of the delta variant of the antibiotics spread in Mesa County, Colorado, officials considered banning alcohol at Country Jam or trying to zithromax discount get attendees a single-dose Johnson &. Johnson treatment in the weeks leading up to the music festival. They settled on signs warning people online and at the venue that the area was a buy antibiotics hot spot.(Rae Ellen Bichell / KHN) “We’re making national news for our buy antibiotics variant and the CDC is here investigating, but we have a huge festival where people aren’t masking,” said LaCount. €œAre we going to get herd immunity over here just zithromax discount because everyone’s going to get it?.

I mean, that’s probably going to happen at some point, but at what cost?. € LaCount’s worries aren’t necessarily for herself or her spouse — they are both vaccinated — but for their son, who can’t be vaccinated because he is under 12. She is uneasy about sending him to school in zithromax discount the fall for fear of exposure to the variant. She is reluctant to take him to birthday parties this summer knowing there’s a good likelihood he’ll be teased for wearing a mask.

A few yards away from LaCount and zithromax discount her son on the playground, a man fished in a still pond with his 10-month-old daughter in a backpack. Garrett Whiting, who works in construction, said he believes buy antibiotics is still being “blown out of proportion,” especially by the news media. €œThey got everybody scared really, really fast,” said Whiting, slowly reeling in a sparkly blue lure from the water. €œThere’s no reason to stop living your life just because you’re scared of something.” zithromax discount Whiting tested positive for buy antibiotics about three months earlier.

He said he doesn’t plan to get vaccinated, nor does his wife. As for the baby on his back, he said he’s not sure whether they’ll have her vaccinated when regulators approve the shot for young children. The delta variant is one of six “variants of concern” circulating in the U.S., according to the CDC, because the delta strain spreads more easily, might be more resistant to treatment and might be better zithromax discount at infecting vaccinated people than other variants. The delta variant has raised alarms around the world.

Parts of Australia have locked down again after the variant leapfrogged its way from an American aircrew to a birthday party where it infected all unvaccinated guests, health officials said, and after it also jumped between shoppers in a “scarily fleeting” moment in which two people walked past each other in a mall. Israel reissued an indoor mask requirement after a spate of zithromax discount new cases linked to schoolchildren. A leading health official there said about a third of the 125 people who were infected were vaccinated, and most of the new s were delta variant. A rise in delta zithromax discount variant cases delayed the United Kingdom’s planned reopening in June.

But public health officials have concluded after studying about 14,000 cases of the delta variant in that country that full vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNTech treatment is 96% effective against hospitalization. Studies around the world have made similar findings. There is also evidence the Moderna and Johnson & zithromax discount. Johnson treatments are effective against the variant.

Los Angeles County recently recommended that residents resume wearing masks indoors regardless of vaccination status, over concern about the delta variant. The World Health Organization is also urging vaccinated people to wear masks, zithromax discount though the CDC hasn’t changed its guidelines allowing vaccinated people to gather indoors without masks. The variant arrived in Mesa County this spring, when it accounted for just 1% of all cases nationwide, said Jeff Kuhr, executive director of Mesa County Public Health. €œWe were winding down just like everyone else.

We were down to less than five cases zithromax discount a day. I think we had about two people hospitalized at one point,” Kuhr said. €œWe felt as if we were out of the woods.” He even signed off on Country Jam, which bills itself as the zithromax discount state’s “biggest country music party.” But in early May, the delta variant appeared in a burst, with five cases among adults working for the school district. €œIt started to hit the children, those that were not of the age to be vaccinated,” Kuhr said.

€œThat was telling me that, you know, wearing masks in school was not providing the protection with this new variant that it had previously.” A sign urged Country Jam concertgoers to wear masks regardless of their vaccination status. Most did not zithromax discount. (Rae Ellen Bichell / KHN) The county then started to see breakthrough cases in fully vaccinated elderly residents in long-term care facilities. The hospitals began to fill once more.

Nine vaccinated people died, seven of them since the delta variant’s arrival, though it’s still unclear zithromax discount whether the variant is to blame. All were at least 75 years old, and seven lived in long-term care facilities. Now, Kuhr estimates, “above 90%” of cases in the county are delta variant. The county is seeing zithromax discount the same trend as the state.

The vast majority of people testing positive for buy antibiotics, and people being hospitalized with it, are unvaccinated. €œIt’s a superspreader strain if there ever was one,” Eric Topol zithromax discount with the Scripps Research Institution told Scientific American. But he said people fully vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna shots “should not worry at all.” There is less information about the protection offered by Johnson &. Johnson’s treatment.

Mesa County zithromax discount health officials considered canceling the music festival, but “it was really too late,” Kuhr said. After the announcement that the festival was on, about 23,000 people bought tickets. Officials weighed banning alcohol or trying to get attendees a Johnson &. Johnson single-dose zithromax discount treatment in the weeks leading up to the festival.

In the end, they settled on messaging. Signs warning people online and at the venue that the area was a buy antibiotics hot spot. According to zithromax discount CDC guidance, outdoor events were low risk. A sporting event at the end of May in Grand Junction that filled a baseball stadium had resulted in only one known case, which made Kuhr optimistic.

€œWe put messaging on Country Jam’s website, zithromax discount and then in their social media pages, saying, you know, ‘Mesa County’s a hot spot. Be prepared,’” Kuhr said. A stormy Friday dampened concert attendance at Country Jam. But on the last day of the festival, the sun was out and throngs of cowboy boot-clad concertgoers stepped around prairie dog burrows zithromax discount and kicked up gray-yellow dust on the path to the venue entrance.

Concertgoers head toward the entrance of Country Jam in Mack, Colorado, on June 26, 2021. The event, which this year featured Luke Combs, Toby Keith and Carrie Underwood, bills itself as the state’s “biggest country music party.”(Rae Ellen Bichell / KHN) Many reveled in being able to attend a summertime event like an outdoor festival, taking it as another sign that the zithromax was waning. €œbuy antibiotics is over in Colorado,” said zithromax discount Ryan Barkley, a college student from Durango who was playing beer pong in an inflatable pool at his campsite outside the gates. That day, 39 people in the county were hospitalized with buy antibiotics, and a CDC investigative team had arrived just four days earlier.

Inside the gates, an open field was filled with stages, concession stands, and vendors selling cowboy hats, coffee mugs and hunting clothes — and crowds of people. Chelsea Sondgeroth zithromax discount and her 5-year-old daughter took in the scene. €œIt’s just nice to see people’s faces again,” said Sondgeroth, who lives in Grand Junction and previously had buy antibiotics. She described it as one of the mildest illnesses she’s ever had, though her senses of taste and smell have not zithromax discount returned to normal.

Watermelon tastes rotten to her, beer tasted like Windex for a while, and her daughter said Sondgeroth can’t smell certain flowers anymore. Sondgeroth said she’s holding off on getting vaccinated until more research comes out. Waiting in line at the daiquiri stand, Alicia Nix was one of the few people in sight zithromax discount wearing a mask. €œI’ve gotten people that say, you know, ‘That stuff is over.

Get over yourself and take that off,’” said Nix, who is vaccinated. €œIt isn’t over.” Amid the music, beer and dancing, a bus turned into a mobile treatment zithromax discount clinic was empty. A nurse on duty played Jenga with an Army National Guard soldier. Just six people of the thousands attending were vaccinated on the bus.

€œYou can lead a horse to water, but you zithromax discount can’t make them drink,” Nix said from behind her blue surgical mask. The Colorado state health department sent a mobile buy antibiotics treatment clinic to Country Jam. In the three days of the music festival, only six people of the thousands attending were vaccinated on the bus.(Rae Ellen Bichell / KHN) This story was produced by KHN zithromax discount (Kaiser Health News), a national newsroom that produces in-depth journalism about health issues. John Eckenrode, president of the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, pressed state officials for months to give prison workers the same status as hospital staff members, first responders and teachers.

€œThis is a health and public safety crisis,” Eckenrode said in a January zithromax discount statement. €œIt’s time to prioritize vaccinating staff, so they can do their jobs and also not worry about bringing the zithromax home to their loved ones.” Yet, after the lifesaving shots became widely available, Pennsylvania prison guards have not rushed out to get them — even though the corrections department has had more than 4,700 staff members test positive over the course of the zithromax and eight die. By mid-June 22% of Department of Corrections employees were inoculated, according to voluntary reports collected by the department. At one prison, just 7% of staffers zithromax discount had received shots.

Meanwhile, more than 75% of the 39,000 men and women incarcerated in Pennsylvania’s 24 state prisons have had the shots, according to the department. EMAIL SIGN-Up Subscribe to California Healthline's zithromax discount free Daily Edition. That disparity is evident across the country. While a majority of inmates in most states are fully vaccinated, prison staffers are not, according to data on 36 states and the federal Bureau of Prisons compiled by the Prison Policy Initiative using information from several prison advocacy and journalism groups. That report — released in April, when the treatment was becoming more easily accessible — found 48% of prison staff members nationwide had received at least one dose, although in some states rates were in the teens or lower.

Eckenrode declined zithromax discount to comment to KHN. But he recently told WHYY, the NPR member station in Philadelphia, that he believes many more officers are vaccinated and not reporting their status to prison officials. He acknowledged reluctance among his members. €œI think that no matter what kind of demographic you look at, there’s treatment hesitancy,” zithromax discount he said.

The treatments were “approved under experimental conditions, and I believe that it should be an individual choice.” One officer with the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, which reported last month that it had vaccinated 43% of inmates, compared with 30% of staffers, said he waited until late June because he and his wife had survived a bout of buy antibiotics and felt they had natural protection from the zithromax. Some colleagues have been spooked by internet videos from anti-vaccination groups showing doctors talking about treatment-related deaths or stoking concerns that the Food and Drug Administration’s emergency use authorization for the treatments — rather than formal approval — means they are less dependable, said the officer, who asked to remain anonymous because corrections staffers are not authorized to speak to reporters. He added that a sense of “I don’t want people to think I’m weak” machismo and right-wing zithromax discount politics play into the decision-making. €œThere are a lot of conspiracy theorists,” the New York guard said.

buy antibiotics has taken a high toll zithromax discount inside prisons. Two news organizations, the Marshall Project and The Associated Press, have found nearly 400,000 buy antibiotics cases in U.S. Prisons and more than 2,700 inmate deaths. Among staff members, more than 114,000 cases and more than 200 deaths zithromax discount have been reported nationwide.

Staff vaccination statistics often do not give the full picture, since states generally don’t require corrections staffers to report their status. In California, which has the nation’s second-largest prison system, a reform group is suing over low staff vaccination rates, arguing that unprotected prison workers put vulnerable inmates at risk. State tallies show that in late Juneabout 52% zithromax discount of prison staffers had been fully vaccinated versus 71% of inmates. In its court filing, the Prison Law Office said that, despite efforts by California officials encouraging vaccinations, “infected and unvaccinated staff members continue to pose a significant threat to incarcerated communities.” Health experts say prison staff members also endanger surrounding communities.

Unvaccinated officers are a common cause of , because they go back and forth between the prison and the community, said Dr. Anne Spaulding, an associate professor in epidemiology at Emory University and former medical director at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections zithromax discount. Spaulding also pointed to the “downstream effects” of unvaccinated staffers — especially corrections officers (known as COs), who are in daily close contact with inmates — on the inmates’ mental health. €œIf it passes from CO to CO, what does that zithromax discount mean with staff shortages?.

More lockdowns, less programming,” she said. €œIt’s going to affect the mental health of those incarcerated, who already have restricted lives.” Kirstin Cornnell, social services director with the Pennsylvania Prison Society, which advocates for reforms, said lockdowns resulting from sick staff members could lead to suspension of family visitation, disrupting connections critical to inmates’ mental health. €œWe have really serious concerns about how low the rate of staff vaccination zithromax discount is,” said Cornnell. €œThis increases tension in an already stressful situation.” Pennsylvania Corrections Secretary John Wetzel and officials in other states say that, while they are not considering making the shots mandatory, they are pressing employees to get vaccinated.

€œWe continue to educate our staff and encourage them to get vaccinated for their own protection, but also for those around them,” said Wetzel. €œEveryone knows that prisons are breeding grounds for infectious diseases like buy antibiotics, largely because inmates live so close together.” While union officials in several states did not respond to queries, prison officials said zithromax discount their employees have the same concerns as the general public. Religious or other objections, false conspiracy theories about the treatments, worries about a new shot that was developed quickly. €œThey want to see how it plays out with others who are vaccinated,” said John Bull, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety in North Carolina — where 6,607 department employees, or roughly half the staff at 55 facilities, have been vaccinated through prison clinics.

€œThey didn’t want to zithromax discount be guinea pigs.” Incentives, such as gift cards, cash lotteries and paid time off, have boosted staff rates in some states, officials said. But Chris Gautz, a spokesperson for the Michigan corrections department, said his state will not provide incentives, despite having only about 15% of staffers vaccinated. He said his agency decided disease prevention was zithromax discount a better motivator. €œThe benefit of not dying is not dying,” he said.

€œA $5 gift card to Frosty Boy is not going to put someone over the edge.” The Prison Law Office and other groups are advocating for mandatory prison staff vaccinations, but the potential face-off with powerful prison worker unions has thwarted that idea in some states. California Gov zithromax discount. Gavin Newsom said at a May news conference that he had no plans to make vaccinations mandatory and would instead urge the corrections officers union to persuade its members to get the shots. Health experts point to other public institutions, such as schools and colleges, that require vaccination.

€œStates have the ability to mandate vaccination when it puts someone at risk,” said Joseph zithromax discount Amon, an epidemiologist and director of the Office of Global Health at Drexel University in Philadelphia. €œThis is a case that makes sense. There could be limited exemption, but there should be an expectation that all staff be vaccinated.” This story was produced by KHN (Kaiser Health News), a national newsroom that produces in-depth journalism about health issues. SummaryThis report describes sleep duration and sleep quality among U.S. Nonpregnant women aged 40–59 by menopausal status. Perimenopausal women were most likely to sleep less than 7 hours, on average, in a 24-hour period compared with premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

In contrast, postmenopausal women were most likely to have poor-quality sleep. A greater percentage of postmenopausal women had frequent trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, and not waking well rested compared with premenopausal women. The percentage of perimenopausal women with poor-quality sleep was between the percentages for the other two groups in all three categories.

Sleep duration changes with advancing age (4), but sleep duration and quality are also influenced by concurrent changes in women’s reproductive hormone levels (5). Because sleep is critical for optimal health and well-being (6), the findings in this report highlight areas for further research and targeted health promotion. DefinitionsMenopausal status.

A three-level categorical variable was created from a series of questions that asked women. 1) “How old were you when your periods or menstrual cycles started?. €.

2) “Do you still have periods or menstrual cycles?. €. 3) “When did you have your last period or menstrual cycle?.

€. And 4) “Have you ever had both ovaries removed, either as part of a hysterectomy or as one or more separate surgeries?. € Women were postmenopausal if they a) had gone without a menstrual cycle for more than 1 year or b) were in surgical menopause after the removal of their ovaries.

Women were perimenopausal if they a) no longer had a menstrual cycle and b) their last menstrual cycle was 1 year ago or less. € Data source and methodsData from the 2015 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) were used for this analysis. NHIS is a multipurpose health survey conducted continuously throughout the year by the National Center for Health Statistics. Interviews are conducted in person in respondents’ homes, but follow-ups to complete interviews may be conducted over the telephone.

Data for this analysis came from the Sample Adult core and cancer supplement sections of the 2015 NHIS. For more information about NHIS, including the questionnaire, visit the NHIS website. All analyses used weights to produce national estimates. Estimates on sleep duration and quality in this report are nationally representative of the civilian, noninstitutionalized nonpregnant female population aged 40–59 living in households across the United States.

The sample design is described in more detail elsewhere (7). Point estimates and their estimated variances were calculated using SUDAAN software (8) to account for the complex sample design of NHIS. NCHS Data Brief zithromax discount No. 286, September 2017PDF Versionpdf icon (374 KB)Anjel Vahratian, Ph.D.Key findingsData from the National Health Interview Survey, 2015Among those aged 40–59, perimenopausal women (56.0%) were more likely than postmenopausal (40.5%) and premenopausal (32.5%) women to sleep less than 7 hours, on average, in a 24-hour period.Postmenopausal women aged 40–59 were more likely than premenopausal women aged 40–59 to have trouble falling asleep (27.1% compared with 16.8%, respectively), and staying asleep (35.9% compared with 23.7%), four times or more in the past week.Postmenopausal women aged 40–59 (55.1%) were more likely than premenopausal women aged 40–59 (47.0%) to not wake up feeling well rested 4 days or more in the past week.Sleep duration and quality are important contributors to health and wellness. Insufficient sleep is zithromax discount associated with an increased risk for chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (1) and diabetes (2).

Women may be particularly vulnerable to sleep problems during times of reproductive hormonal change, such as after the menopausal transition. Menopause is “the permanent cessation of menstruation that zithromax discount occurs after the loss of ovarian activity” (3). This data brief describes sleep duration and sleep quality among nonpregnant women aged 40–59 by menopausal status.

The age range selected for this analysis reflects the focus on midlife sleep health. In this analysis, 74.2% of women are premenopausal, 3.7% are perimenopausal, and zithromax discount 22.1% are postmenopausal. Keywords.

Premenopausal women still had a menstrual cycle. Not waking feeling well rested. Determined by respondents who answered 3 days or less on the questionnaire item asking, “In the past week, on how many days did you wake up feeling well rested?.

€Short sleep duration. Determined by respondents who answered 6 hours or less on the questionnaire item asking, “On average, how many hours of sleep do you get in a 24-hour period?. €Trouble falling asleep.

Determined by respondents who answered four times or more on the questionnaire item asking, “In the past week, how many times did you have trouble falling asleep?. €Trouble staying asleep. Determined by respondents who answered four times or more on the questionnaire item asking, “In the past week, how many times did you have trouble staying asleep?.

Linear and quadratic trend tests of the estimated proportions across menopausal status were tested in SUDAAN via PROC DESCRIPT using the POLY option.

Differences between percentages were evaluated using two-sided significance tests at the 0.05 level. Is zithromax

Since the start of the zithromax, Luz Gallegos and her team of 56 advocates for immigrants have battled the scorching sun, illiteracy and deadly is zithromax propaganda in the fields and fruit groves of the Coachella Valley. As they fanned out to educate farmworkers on how to protect themselves from buy antibiotics, they quickly learned that rumors and disinformation often account for most of the news farmworkers in the area are getting about the disease. The need for boosters and the looming threat of the omicron variant have made is zithromax buy antibiotics communication extra challenging. €œNow, we’re debunking the myths with the boosters.

It’s like a never-ending story,” said Gallegos, executive director of the TODEC (Training Occupational Development Educating Communities) Legal Center, based in Coachella. Gallegos and is zithromax her team huddle in the mornings to discuss a strategy on how to diffuse misinformation before it spreads. €œOnce we start hearing rumors, we try to get ahead of them and create messaging to debunk it before they start penetrating the fields like they did when we first started vaccinating in January.” In January, the word in the fields was that buy antibiotics vaccination would make you sterile. Now, people hear from is zithromax friends and social media that the treatments can turn you into a monkey, change your gender or clone you.

Gallegos and Riverside County health workers managed earlier in the year to get treatments into the arms of most farmworkers in the valley, where dates, citrus and grapes are the dominant crops. That has eased the sales job for some of her crew of TODEC employees and volunteers. €œPeople that got vaccinated, they feel like they’re still here, they’re still alive,” she is zithromax said. €œPeople see science now.” But equity issues that were evident in the first round of treatments are more evident now, including access to health care, language barriers and misinformation, Gallegos said.

Some workers don’t understand why they need a follow-up shot. Others are newcomer migrants who haven’t been vaccinated is zithromax against buy antibiotics at all. Community health organizations have struggled to provide booster shots for the Latino community — whose members account for more than half of buy antibiotics cases in California. By September, about 80% is zithromax of eligible Latinos had received at least one shot, the same rate as whites.

But of the 23.4 million people 65 and older who had received a booster dose by Dec. 13, only 7.8% were Latinos (who make up nearly 10% of that age group), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Latinos of other ages were also relatively unboosted is zithromax. €œLatinos don’t know who to turn to for accurate information,” said Gilberto Lopez, an assistant professor at Arizona State University who has been working on treatment communication.

€œThe government hasn’t been doing the best job, the big national TV channels haven’t been doing that good of a job, and community organizations are working at a hyper-local level.” One basic problem. Credible treatment information and the science that supports it is not readily available is zithromax in Spanish or other languages, said Dr. Yelba Castellon-Lopez, an assistant clinical professor in family medicine at UCLA Health. €œPeople are afraid to contract is zithromax the zithromax in health care settings.

Many avoided seeking care even when they were sick for fear of being put on ventilators, afraid they would never make it out of the hospital.” Pablo Ek Oxte at his home in Los Angeles. Oxte, a plumber originally from the village of Citilcum in Yucatán, Mexico, got his booster shot after hearing a public service announcement in his native Mayan language. (Heidi de Marco / KHN) is zithromax The county has partnered with TODEC to send health care providers out to the fields and hold open vaccination and booster clinics on Fridays. This answers immigrants’ fears of going to the doctor and their concerns that side effects from the shot will cause them to miss work.

€œFridays gives them the opportunity is zithromax to actually recover,” said Gallegos. Castellon-Lopez has been conducting webinars for patients and community members to dispel myths and explain the shifting reality of the buy antibiotics epidemic. €œWhat we’re learning about buy antibiotics is changing every day and that makes it difficult,” she said. €œI think people appreciate having access to doctors who look like them and speak the language.” Disinformation on Spanish AM radio, social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp is fueling continued treatment hesitancy among Latinos, according to a recent is zithromax survey conducted by Change Research and the Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab.

It found that almost 4 in 10 respondents had seen information that made them think the buy antibiotics treatments were not safe or effective. Latino educators are seeking to smother misleading propaganda with culturally relevant, easy-to-understand, accurate information. Lopez, at Arizona is zithromax State University, created the buy antibiotics Health Animation Project, which makes cartoons that address buy antibiotics misinformation. But he thinks health communicators need to inject some bawdiness into their scripts to get people’s attention.

€œThe type of comedy, the type of messaging, the wording we use, it’s G-rated,” said is zithromax Lopez. He just published an animation that drops a few cuss words here and there. €œThat’s the way this population talks. We need to use some of the language that they use to reach out to the community that’s not getting vaccinated.” [embedded content] Language barriers remain a consistent issue, especially for Indigenous-language speakers, said Odilia Romero, executive director of Comunidades Indígenas en Liderazgo (CIELO), is zithromax a Los Angeles nonprofit.

Pablo Ek Oxte, a 52-year-old plumber from a small pueblo in Yucatán, Mexico, rolled up his sleeve for a booster shot on a recent Saturday morning after hearing about the treatment clinic in a public service announcement produced by CIELO in his native Mayan language. The group has posted a series of vaccination cartoons in various Indigenous languages on social media sites. €œI relied on the information from is zithromax CIELO,” said Oxte, who has asthma and diabetes. Although he speaks some Spanish, “I appreciate the information in my language,” he said.

In Oxnard, California, Francisco Didier Ulloa and is zithromax Bernardino Almazán host a show on Radio Indígena in Spanish and Mixteco, an Indigenous Mexican language. €œA lot of our Indigenous brothers don’t speak Spanish, so it was necessary to convey the information in a way that they would listen and understand,” said Ulloa. (Lalo Alcaraz) The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has increased its social media memes and is testing strategies to narrow the vaccination gap between white and Latino residents. The state partnered with political cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz to create a series of cartoons and animations is zithromax promoting vaccination and booster information.

€œWe want people to see themselves and their families reflected in these images and maybe do a double take and think twice about their own family’s situation,” said Alcaraz. €œMaybe it changes their mind about the treatment.” This story was produced by KHN, which publishes California is zithromax Healthline, an editorially independent service of the California Health Care Foundation. Heidi de Marco. heidid@kff.org, @Heidi_deMarco Related Topics Contact Us Submit a Story TipBill Mather, a pharmacist in the small Iowa city of Greenfield, wanted to make sure his neighbors could fill their prescriptions without driving long distances or enduring long wait times.

So when pharmacy chains and big-box stores began expanding into rural markets, he sold his drugstore in 2007 to Pamida, a grocery chain owned is zithromax by the Shopko department store company, hoping that would keep his practice alive. Then, in 2019, when Shopko declared bankruptcy, shuttering more than 360 stores, he and another Shopko pharmacist helped open a new drugstore for the city of about 2,000 people. Across the country, pharmacists like Mather are filling the voids left when large drugstore chains and big-box stores with pharmacies pull out of small communities. In some areas, pharmacists who were let go is zithromax when big chains closed are now opening new drugstores, often in the same locations.

In other areas, pharmacy owners from neighboring towns are opening new branches. Without them, numerous communities would is zithromax have been left with no pharmacy. It didn’t used to be this way. Big-box stores like Shopko started to move aggressively into the pharmacy market 30 years ago, hoping customers would fill their carts while the store filled their prescriptions.

Large chains is zithromax established beachheads in small towns by acquiring independent pharmacies or driving them out of business. Pharmacist Rachel Hall helps customers at the NuCara pharmacy in Greenfield, Iowa. When a Shopko store — and the last pharmacy in the city of about 2,000 residents — closed, patients had to scramble to find places to fill their prescriptions until the NuCara opened. (Kathryn Gamble for KHN) According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of pharmacists employed at big-box stores peaked at is zithromax more than 31,800 in 2012.

But as online sales and mail delivery of consumer goods and prescription drugs grew, the big-box stores had no reason to stay. By 2019, the number is zithromax of big-box pharmacists had dropped to fewer than 18,000. (The bureau no longer reports the number.) “The big-box stores came into smaller and smaller communities, and they, in essence, outcompeted all the other pharmacies in the area,” said David Zgarrick, a pharmacy professor at Northeastern University in Boston. €œNow they’re completely gone and with them the pharmacy services and everything else they provided.

They left a vacuum in a lot of these places.” With CVS Health’s recent is zithromax announcement that it will close 300 stores a year over the next three years, more towns could lose another tier of pharmacies. The big drugstore chains. CVS has not is zithromax yet said which stores will close. €œWe’re considering a number of factors when making these decisions, including local market dynamics, population shifts, store density, and the needs of underserved communities,” said Mike DeAngelis, a CVS Health spokesperson.

€œIn fact, reaching underserved populations has been a priority for us all through the zithromax, such as the access to testing and treatments we’ve provided.” Kathleen Bashur, a spokesperson for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, said chain pharmacies of all types and sizes play a significant role in meeting the health and wellness needs of communities throughout the nation. €œThe decision to is zithromax close a store is a difficult one,” she said. Zgarrick attributes much of the decline in big-box pharmacies to Amazon and other online merchants that undercut the profitability of their non-pharmacy sales. In the past, big-box stores could treat pharmacies as loss leaders and make up that revenue with sales of other goods.

Now, Zgarrick said, big-box stores have to ask tough is zithromax questions about how to allocate their space. €œâ€˜At the end of the day, how are we going to make the most money per square foot?. Is it by having a pharmacy or by is zithromax selling tires?. €™â€ Nelson Lichtenstein, a University of California-Santa Barbara history professor who has chronicled the rise of Walmart, said big-box stores are constantly reevaluating their store locations, closing less profitable stores and opening new ones in places where they think they can make money.

€œThey just keep a kind of slow churn,” he said. The cost of building a big-box store is about $10 million, Lichtenstein said, and such stores can net $200 million in annual revenue is zithromax. Pulling out of a location is therefore not a huge loss for a big company if revenues falter. €œSo they will shut down the stores and leave a devastated town because the Walmart put the other guys out of business,” he said.

Walmart did not answer questions is zithromax about its closures. When the Shopko big-box store in Greenfield, Iowa, closed, its pharmacy’s records were sold to a Walgreens 50 miles away, leaving the city’s roughly 2,000 residents with no easy way to get their medications. (Kathryn Gamble for KHN) The growth in online options for all kinds of items, spurred by people shopping from home is zithromax during the buy antibiotics zithromax, has put further pressure on big-box stores. €œNow they’re less likely to do that roaming shopping than they were five years ago,” said Adam Hartung, a business strategy consultant with Spark Partners.

€œThey’re not going to say, ‘Oh, let’s pick up a prescription and, while we’re at it, let’s walk through the store and look at vacuum cleaners.’ That doesn’t happen anymore.” Hartung said that the U.S. Retail market has an excess of shops, by as much as 40% compared with other countries, and that more big-box stores are likely to close in the coming is zithromax years. But closures provide opportunities for regional chains or pharmacists willing to strike out on their own. In Orofino, is zithromax Idaho, the mayor, the chamber of commerce and many residents appealed to pharmacist Rod Arnzen after Shopko pulled out.

So Arnzen began delivering to Orofino from his store 23 miles away in Kamiah. He then opened a branch in Orofino in the building left behind by the pharmacy that had previously sold its business to Shopko. Andy Pottenger, who owns a pharmacy 45 miles away in Lewiston, Idaho, added a second pharmacy in Orofino, population about is zithromax 3,000, after receiving hundreds of responses to an ad he had placed in the local paper to gauge interest. €œIt was overwhelming,” he said.

€œThat kind of cemented the idea that we should do it.” In Montana, Mike Matovich, a third-generation pharmacist, opened stores in Roundup and Hardin after Shopko closures there. €œIt’s a pretty good-sized community and has a hospital and clinic in town,” Matovich said of Roundup, “and all of a is zithromax sudden people are driving 50 miles one way to fill an antibiotic for a sick child.” Matovich has seen what can happen when a rural community loses its only pharmacy. €œIf there’s a hospital clinic and a pharmacy there, they’re going to do fairly well,” Matovich said. €œOnce you lose one is zithromax or the other, the communities start to struggle because people start leaving to be closer to health care.” For the residents of Greenfield, Iowa, Shopko’s decision meant they had to scramble.

Shopko had sold the pharmacy records to a Walgreens 50 miles away. Some people turned to the Hy-Vee grocery stores in the nearby Iowa cities of Atlantic or Winterset, or to the Walmart in Creston — each at least a half-hour drive away. Others switched is zithromax to mail order. Pharmacist Rachel Hall was seven months pregnant when she learned her employer, Shopko, was shutting down its big-box store in Greenfield, Iowa, leaving her without a job and the city without a pharmacy.

(Kathryn Gamble for KHN) “It was sheer chaos,” former Shopko pharmacist Rachel Hall said. €œPeople were is zithromax trying to figure out what to do, where they should send their prescriptions.” Mather, Hall and the rest of the Greenfield staff were given just one week’s notice after being told they had nothing to worry about. Their pharmacy had been among the chain’s fastest-growing locations. €œWe literally had trophies from Shopko that we threw away when we left,” Hall is zithromax said.

Former Shopko executives contacted by KHN declined interview requests. Shopko Optical, which operates in 11 states, said it is no longer affiliated in any way with Shopko Stores and declined to comment. Mather and Hall is zithromax didn’t want to give up on Greenfield. They reached out to NuCara, a chain with 30 retail pharmacies across five states, and it agreed to help them open a drugstore in their city.

NuCara opened is zithromax pharmacies in two other communities that Shopko vacated. In the Minnesota cities of Cokato and North Branch, NuCara partnered with pharmacists who had previously sold their pharmacies to Shopko, said Brett Barker, vice president of pharmacies for NuCara. In Greenfield, Hall and Mather were forbidden from telling customers about the new NuCara drugstore until Shopko officially closed its doors. Hall said Shopko is zithromax management wanted to maintain the value of the customer files it was selling to Walgreens.

So Hall and Mather asked the local chamber of commerce to get the word out. They found temporary space at the local hospital, which relocated its billing office to accommodate them. A year later, they moved back is zithromax into their former location in the old Shopko building, leasing the space from new owners, who were running a household goods store there. After serving three generations of Greenfield customers, Mather was relieved the town still had a pharmacy.

But he is zithromax couldn’t get past how Shopko had ended things. €œThe way they slammed the door, I was really unhappy about that,” Mather said. €œIt wasn’t fair to all the people at the Greenfield pharmacy and the people of Greenfield. Shopko couldn’t have cared less.” Yet the is zithromax move brought Mather full circle.

Greenfield still has a pharmacy, just as when he started at Murdy Drug in 1968. It’s just a different storefront, with a new name on the sign. The NuCara pharmacy is zithromax in Greenfield, Iowa, moved into the former space of a Shopko pharmacy a year after the Shopko big-box chain shuttered its store there and all its sites around the nation. Case counts and death rates were shockingly high. The treatment rollout, which had started under former President Donald Trump, was disjointed. People were generally is zithromax sequestered in their homes, and kids were relegated to remote learning.

Biden promised to change all that. He said he would differ from Trump in that is zithromax he would listen to the scientists, encourage the use of masks and give the federal government a stronger role in addressing the zithromax. He also pledged to deliver the “most efficient mass vaccination plan in U.S. History” and to get 100 million buy antibiotics shots administered in his first 100 days.

How well did Biden do? is zithromax. We asked four public health experts who said the president’s treatment rollout, overall, was excellent, but his messaging was off at certain points, and other setbacks — both within and beyond his control — stymied progress against buy antibiotics. After all, cases in the U.S. Are again surging, largely due to the delta is zithromax and omicron variants.

In some places, these numbers, as well as hospitalization tallies, are approaching the highest levels in months. This month, the is zithromax U.S. Surpassed 800,000 buy antibiotics-related deaths since the zithromax started, and the 1 million mark is in view. The reopening of Broadway shows — something viewed by many as a sign that normalcy was returning — is facing interruptions as breakthrough cases among cast members cause intermittent performance cancellations.

The sports world is facing its own is zithromax buy antibiotics-related disturbances. Colleges have announced they will hold final exams remotely and are canceling winter graduations. All of this calls into question how much progress has been made against buy antibiotics. Let’s take a look at what happened in 2021 is zithromax and whether Biden’s efforts have made a difference.

Even before taking office, Biden set an initial target of getting 100 million doses of treatment administered in his first 100 days. While there was initial uncertainty about this target, it turned out to is zithromax be an easily achievable goal that took only 58 days. Still, treatment distribution unfolded by fits and starts. At first, only certain populations were eligible for shots.

And when Biden announced he was is zithromax ordering states to open up eligibility to all adults May 1, demand outstripped treatment supply in many locations. By summer, though, most who wanted a treatment could get one — free of charge. That push is zithromax “was extraordinary,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association.

€œThe Biden administration increased the number of people to get shots, they increased the number of places to get shots, they reduced the number of disparities for those getting shots,” he said. Indeed, getting is zithromax almost half of the U.S. Population fully vaccinated in the first six months of 2021 resulted in a huge drop in buy antibiotics cases, hospitalizations and deaths by early summer. Recent data from the Commonwealth Fund indicates that the buy antibiotics vaccination program in the U.S.

Prevented 1 million deaths and 10 million is zithromax hospitalizations. Yet, those two optimistic signs — high treatment availability and low buy antibiotics cases — led the Biden administration to prematurely assert triumph over the zithromax, said Dr. Leana Wen, a is zithromax professor of health policy and management at George Washington University. This was just one of several messaging missteps made by Biden and his administration in 2021, said the experts.

€œThey had declared victory right when delta was starting to surge,” Wen said. Wen pointed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “confused” messaging, starting with an is zithromax announcement in May that those who were fully vaccinated no longer needed to wear masks indoors or outdoors, or practice physical distancing, even though those strategies had proved useful in combating the zithromax. The change in mask guidance came at a pivotal time. The dangerous delta variant was beginning to take hold throughout the U.S., and public health officials were only starting to understand that those who had been vaccinated could still spread the zithromax.

As delta boosted case counts in midsummer, the CDC had to walk back its guidance to recommend that vaccinated people resume wearing masks indoors if they lived in an is zithromax area with substantial or high transmission. This remains the recommendation. Yet, that initial announcement opened a door is zithromax for many states and localities to repeal their mask requirements and never reinstate them, despite continued high levels of transmission nationwide. €œThe unmasking order back in May was too hastily done,” Benjamin said.

€œThat was a misstep.” Also, Biden’s announcement in mid-August that booster shots would be available by Sept. 20 to all Americans preceded both the Food and Drug Administration’s recommendation and the CDC’s guidance on boosters for is zithromax everyone — another stumble. The FDA didn’t authorize boosters for all adults until November. €œI think people is zithromax saw that as him making a political statement,” Benjamin said.

€œHe knew that was where we were going, where the science was taking us. He got ahead of it.” Overall, though, Biden followed the science, said the experts. Plus, implementing regular buy antibiotics media is zithromax briefings with scientists and public health leaders, and allowing Dr. Anthony Fauci, his chief medical adviser, to be front and center and not contradicting his advice, represented a meaningful change from the previous administration, when daily briefings were held but speakers often dismissed scientific evidence in favor of untested treatments and the president, himself, would dismiss the zithromax’s severity.

Biden also used the power of his office to advance certain public health measures. He issued is zithromax treatment mandates for federal employees and contractors, health care workers and certain companies. This has increased the number of people vaccinated, though the mandates, except for the one aimed at government workers, are on hold while objections work their way through the court system. And, despite state rollbacks of mask mandates, the president is zithromax has continued to require masking in areas under his control, including within the interstate transportation and air travel industries and in federal buildings.

He also signed a $1.9 trillion buy antibiotics relief law in March that provided financial assistance to people in the form of stimulus checks, child tax credits and additional unemployment benefits, as well as aid to states and local governments. However, one area in which government efforts have been severely lacking is buy antibiotics testing, said every public health expert we consulted. €œWe need is zithromax more availability of at-home rapid tests. There shouldn’t be shortages,” said Dr.

Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, which represents state and local public health agencies. The Biden administration has invoked the Defense Production Act to ramp is zithromax up production of rapid tests, and is providing tests free of charge to community health clinics and requiring private insurance companies to reimburse consumers for tests they buy. It could do more, said Jen Kates, director of global health and HIV policy at KFF. €œThey still haven’t gone to the next step and bought is zithromax tests and sent them to every household, to really blanket the country with tests,” Kates said.

That would prove especially vital if the U.S. Does indeed experience a winter surge due to delta and omicron as anticipated. Variants, especially delta, have caused more serious disease symptoms than is zithromax other forms of the buy antibiotics zithromax, exacerbating the challenge of battling the zithromax this year. Still, data shows that buy antibiotics-related death rates were far higher among the unvaccinated than the vaccinated.

The volume of people unwilling to get the shot because of treatment hesitancy or misinformation may is zithromax have contributed to the high number of buy antibiotics deaths in 2021, which have surpassed 2020, said Kates. In addition, buy antibiotics treatments weren’t widely available to everyone in the U.S. Until May. Plus, during 2020, is zithromax much of the U.S.

Was locked down at home, while many activities have resumed in 2021, with increased opportunities for viral spread. Still, under Biden, according to the latest metrics, more than 61% of the U.S. Population — and 72% of adults — have been fully vaccinated against is zithromax buy antibiotics. €œI think we should really be celebrating the 70% more,” Plescia said.

€œFor adult vaccinations, we never get anywhere close to that number with other treatments, like influenza.” Yet, as the nation stares down is zithromax omicron, the country braces for increasing cases amid continued uncertainty over when the zithromax will finally end. Experts agreed the U.S. Has made positive gains in its efforts against buy antibiotics this year, but there is more work to do. Testing, continuing to encourage vaccinations and boosters in the U.S., and providing shots to the world — to help is zithromax prevent future variants — are the only ways to reach a point where buy antibiotics becomes endemic, they said.

€œWe are in a different place. Last year we needed treatments. Now we need to get to the point where testing is is zithromax the norm,” Wen said. €œThis is how we’re going to live with buy antibiotics in our lives in the future and is how we as America will be able to move on.” Victoria Knight.

Since the start of the zithromax, Luz Gallegos and her team of 56 advocates for immigrants have battled the scorching zithromax discount sun, illiteracy and http://markgrigsby.net/buy-generic-cialis-online/ deadly propaganda in the fields and fruit groves of the Coachella Valley. As they fanned out to educate farmworkers on how to protect themselves from buy antibiotics, they quickly learned that rumors and disinformation often account for most of the news farmworkers in the area are getting about the disease. The need for boosters and the looming threat of zithromax discount the omicron variant have made buy antibiotics communication extra challenging. €œNow, we’re debunking the myths with the boosters.

It’s like a never-ending story,” said Gallegos, executive director of the TODEC (Training Occupational Development Educating Communities) Legal Center, based in Coachella. Gallegos and her team huddle in the mornings to discuss a strategy on zithromax discount how to diffuse misinformation before it spreads. €œOnce we start hearing rumors, we try to get ahead of them and create messaging to debunk it before they start penetrating the fields like they did when we first started vaccinating in January.” In January, the word in the fields was that buy antibiotics vaccination would make you sterile. Now, people hear from friends and social zithromax discount media that the treatments can turn you into a monkey, change your gender or clone you.

Gallegos and Riverside County health workers managed earlier in the year to get treatments into the arms of most farmworkers in the valley, where dates, citrus and grapes are the dominant crops. That has eased the sales job for some of her crew of TODEC employees and volunteers. €œPeople that got vaccinated, they zithromax discount feel like they’re still here, they’re still alive,” she said. €œPeople see science now.” But equity issues that were evident in the first round of treatments are more evident now, including access to health care, language barriers and misinformation, Gallegos said.

Some workers don’t understand why they need a follow-up shot. Others are newcomer migrants who haven’t been zithromax discount vaccinated against buy antibiotics at all. Community health organizations have struggled to provide booster shots for the Latino community — whose members account for more than half of buy antibiotics cases in California. By September, about 80% of eligible Latinos zithromax discount had received at least one shot, the same rate as whites.

But of the 23.4 million people 65 and older who had received a booster dose by Dec. 13, only 7.8% were Latinos (who make up nearly 10% of that age group), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Latinos of other zithromax discount ages were also relatively unboosted.

Credible treatment information and the science that supports zithromax discount it is not readily available in Spanish or other languages, said Dr. Yelba Castellon-Lopez, an assistant clinical professor in family medicine at UCLA Health. €œPeople are afraid to contract the zithromax in health care settings zithromax discount.

(Heidi de Marco / KHN) The county has zithromax discount partnered with TODEC to send health care providers out to the fields and hold open vaccination and booster clinics on Fridays. This answers immigrants’ fears of going to the doctor and their concerns that side effects from the shot will cause them to miss work.

€œFridays gives them the opportunity to actually recover,” zithromax discount said Gallegos. Castellon-Lopez has been conducting webinars for patients and community members to dispel myths and explain the shifting reality of the buy antibiotics epidemic. €œWhat we’re learning about buy antibiotics is changing every day and that makes it difficult,” she said. €œI think people appreciate having access to doctors who look like them and speak the language.” Disinformation on Spanish AM radio, social media zithromax discount and messaging apps like WhatsApp is fueling continued treatment hesitancy among Latinos, according to a recent survey conducted by Change Research and the Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab.

It found that almost 4 in 10 respondents had seen information that made them think the buy antibiotics treatments were not safe or effective. Latino educators are seeking to smother misleading propaganda with culturally relevant, easy-to-understand, accurate information. Lopez, at Arizona State University, created the buy antibiotics Health Animation Project, which zithromax discount makes cartoons that address buy antibiotics misinformation. But he thinks health communicators need to inject some bawdiness into their scripts to get people’s attention.

€œThe type of comedy, the type of messaging, the wording we use, it’s G-rated,” said zithromax discount Lopez. He just published an animation that drops a few cuss words here and there. €œThat’s the way this population talks. We need to use some of the language that they use to reach out to the community that’s not getting vaccinated.” [embedded content] Language barriers remain zithromax discount a consistent issue, especially for Indigenous-language speakers, said Odilia Romero, executive director of Comunidades Indígenas en Liderazgo (CIELO), a Los Angeles nonprofit.

€œI relied on the information from CIELO,” said Oxte, zithromax discount who has asthma and diabetes. Although he speaks some Spanish, “I appreciate the information in my language,” he said.

In Oxnard, California, Francisco Didier Ulloa and Bernardino Almazán host a show on Radio Indígena in Spanish and Mixteco, an Indigenous zithromax discount Mexican language. The state partnered with political cartoonist zithromax discount Lalo Alcaraz to create a series of cartoons and animations promoting vaccination and booster information.

€œWe want people to see themselves and their families reflected in these images and maybe do a double take and think twice about their own family’s situation,” said Alcaraz. €œMaybe it changes their mind about the treatment.” This story was produced by KHN, which publishes California Healthline, an editorially independent service of zithromax discount the California Health Care Foundation.

So when pharmacy chains and big-box stores began expanding into rural markets, he sold his drugstore in 2007 to Pamida, a grocery chain owned by zithromax discount the Shopko department store company, hoping that would keep his practice alive. In some areas, pharmacists who were let go when big chains closed are now opening new drugstores, zithromax discount often in the same locations.

In other areas, pharmacy owners from neighboring towns are opening new branches. Without them, numerous communities would have been left zithromax discount with no pharmacy. It didn’t used to be this way. Big-box stores like Shopko started to move aggressively into the pharmacy market 30 years ago, hoping customers would fill their carts while the store filled their prescriptions.

Large chains established beachheads in small towns by acquiring independent pharmacies or driving them zithromax discount out of business. (Kathryn Gamble zithromax discount for KHN) According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of pharmacists employed at big-box stores peaked at more than 31,800 in 2012.

But as online sales and mail delivery of consumer goods and prescription drugs grew, the big-box stores had no reason to stay. By 2019, the number of big-box pharmacists had dropped to fewer than zithromax discount 18,000.

They left a vacuum in a lot of these places.” With CVS Health’s recent announcement that it will close 300 stores a year over the next three zithromax discount years, more towns could lose another tier of pharmacies. The big drugstore chains. CVS has not yet zithromax discount said which stores will close.

€œThe decision to close a store is a difficult one,” zithromax discount she said. Zgarrick attributes much of the decline in big-box pharmacies to Amazon and other online merchants that undercut the profitability of their non-pharmacy sales. In the past, big-box stores could treat pharmacies as loss leaders and make up that revenue with sales of other goods.

Now, Zgarrick said, big-box stores have zithromax discount to ask tough questions about how to allocate their space. €œâ€˜At the end of the day, how are we going to make the most money per square foot?. Is it by having a pharmacy or by selling zithromax discount tires?.

The cost zithromax discount of building a big-box store is about $10 million, Lichtenstein said, and such stores can net $200 million in annual revenue. Pulling out of a location is therefore not a huge loss for a big company if revenues falter. €œSo they will shut down the stores and leave a devastated town because the Walmart put the other guys out of business,” he said.

Walmart did not answer questions about zithromax discount its closures. When the Shopko big-box store in Greenfield, Iowa, closed, its pharmacy’s records were sold to a Walgreens 50 miles away, leaving the city’s roughly 2,000 residents with no easy way to get their medications. (Kathryn Gamble for KHN) The growth in online options for all kinds of items, spurred by people shopping from home during the buy antibiotics zithromax, has zithromax discount put further pressure on big-box stores.

Retail market has an excess of shops, by as much as 40% compared with other countries, and that more big-box stores are zithromax discount likely to close in the coming years. But closures provide opportunities for regional chains or pharmacists willing to strike out on their own. In Orofino, Idaho, the zithromax discount mayor, the chamber of commerce and many residents appealed to pharmacist Rod Arnzen after Shopko pulled out.

So Arnzen began delivering to Orofino from his store 23 miles away in Kamiah. He then opened a branch in Orofino in the building left behind by the pharmacy that had previously sold its business to Shopko. Andy Pottenger, who owns a pharmacy 45 miles away in zithromax discount Lewiston, Idaho, added a second pharmacy in Orofino, population about 3,000, after receiving hundreds of responses to an ad he had placed in the local paper to gauge interest. €œIt was overwhelming,” he said.

€œThat kind of cemented the idea that we should do it.” In Montana, Mike Matovich, a third-generation pharmacist, opened stores in Roundup and Hardin after Shopko closures there. €œIt’s a pretty good-sized community and has a hospital and clinic in town,” Matovich said of Roundup, “and all of a sudden people are driving 50 miles one way to fill an antibiotic for a sick child.” Matovich has seen what can happen when a rural community loses its zithromax discount only pharmacy. €œIf there’s a hospital clinic and a pharmacy there, they’re going to do fairly well,” Matovich said. €œOnce you lose one or the other, the communities start to struggle because people start leaving to be closer to health care.” For the residents of Greenfield, Iowa, Shopko’s zithromax discount decision meant they had to scramble.

Shopko had sold the pharmacy records to a Walgreens 50 miles away. Some people turned to the Hy-Vee grocery stores in the nearby Iowa cities of Atlantic or Winterset, or to the Walmart in Creston — each at least a half-hour drive away. Others switched zithromax discount to mail order.

€œPeople were trying zithromax discount to figure out what to do, where they should send their prescriptions.” Mather, Hall and the rest of the Greenfield staff were given just one week’s notice after being told they had nothing to worry about. Their pharmacy had been among the chain’s fastest-growing locations. €œWe literally had trophies from Shopko that we threw away when we left,” Hall said zithromax discount.

Former Shopko executives contacted by KHN declined interview requests. Shopko Optical, which operates in 11 states, said it is no longer affiliated in any way with Shopko Stores and declined to comment. Mather and Hall didn’t want to give zithromax discount up on Greenfield. They reached out to NuCara, a chain with 30 retail pharmacies across five states, and it agreed to help them open a drugstore in their city.

NuCara opened pharmacies in two other communities zithromax discount that Shopko vacated. Hall said Shopko management wanted to maintain the zithromax discount value of the customer files it was selling to Walgreens.

So Hall and Mather asked the local chamber of commerce to get the word out. They found temporary space at the local hospital, which relocated its billing office to accommodate them. A year later, they moved back into their former location in the old Shopko building, zithromax discount leasing the space from new owners, who were running a household goods store there. After serving three generations of Greenfield customers, Mather was relieved the town still had a pharmacy.

But he couldn’t get past how zithromax discount Shopko had ended things. €œThe way they slammed the door, I was really unhappy about that,” Mather said. €œIt wasn’t fair to all the people at the Greenfield pharmacy and the people of Greenfield. Shopko couldn’t have cared less.” Yet the move brought zithromax discount Mather full circle.

Greenfield still has a pharmacy, just as when he started at Murdy Drug in 1968. It’s just a different storefront, with a new name on the sign. The NuCara pharmacy in Greenfield, Iowa, moved into the former space of a Shopko pharmacy a year after zithromax discount the Shopko big-box chain shuttered its store there and all its sites around the nation.
